Description | The antibody to CK18 usually will be positive with adenocarcinoma and basal cell carcinoma. It may be useful for the differentiation between adenocarcinoma and mesothelioma on one side (CK18 positive) and squamous cell carcinoma and non-epithelial tumours (CK18 negative) on the other. Cytokeratins are a group of water-insoluble filamentous proteins. They are constituents of the cytoskeleton of epidermal cells and other epithelial cells. Up to now 20 different cytokeratins have been characterised by gel electrophoresis. They have been subdivided into a basic and an acid subfamily. Most frequently the nomenclature according to Moll et al. (1982) is used. Cytokeratin 18 is expressed by simple epithelia of the intestinal tract, lung, bronchi, u |
