TIMP-1 (Tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase 1) is a glycoprotein that is well recognized for its role in extracellular matrix remodeling through controlling the activity of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs). Independent of MMP inhibition, TIMPs also act as signaling molecules and plays important roles in cell growth, apoptosis, differentiation, angiogenesis, and oncogenesis.
