Description | GSK-3 has been identified as a target of Akt that plays a role in the regulation of apoptosis in a variety of normal and transformed cell types including muscle cells, hepatocytes, neurons, and colon cancer cells. Akt-dependent phosphorylation of GSK-3 causes its inactivation, blocking downstream proapoptotic pathways, e.g., caspase and -catenin signaling. Akt-dependent regulation of GSK-3 activity contributes to the growth and hypertrophy of skeletal and cardiac muscle and inhibits apoptosis in vascular smooth muscle |
