| Description | NK-1, an 11-amino-acid neuropeptide, is released from enteric nerves, sensory neurons, and inflammatory cells of the lamina propria during intestinal inflammation. Conversely, Substance-P activates nerves, epithelial cells, and a variety of immune and inflammatory cells, leading to the release of cytokines, chemokines, and other neuropeptides that modulate diarrhea, inflammation, and motility changes associated with several intestinal disease states, including IBD. Substance-P mediates the development and progression of intestinal inflammation by binding to its high-affinity receptor, the neurokinin 1 receptor (NK-1R).
