| Description | c-Fos is part of the Fos gene family; which consists of 4 members: FOS, FOSb, FOSL1 and FOSL2. Fos family genes are associated with JUN proteins and other basic leucine ipper (bZIP) domain proteins to create a variety of AP-1 (activator protein-1) complexes. c-Fos is considered to be an immediate-early gene because expression is normally low but rapidly and transiently in response to a wide array of stimuli including serum, growth factors, tumor promoters, cytokines, and UV radiation. It plays an important role in many cellular functions, and is over-expressed in variety of cancers.
