Description | Serum albumin (also known as BSA or Fraction V) is a serum albumin protein derived from cows. [1] It is composed of 585 amino acid residues, and its molecular weight is about 66.5KDa. The BSA is the main protein of plasma, and it has a good binding capacity for water, Ca2+, Na+, K+, fatty acids, hormones, bilirubin and drugs. Its main function is the regulation of the colloidal osmotic pressure of blood. It is often used as a protein concentration standard, and it has numerous biochemical applications including ELISAs (Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay), immunoblots, and immunohistochemistry. |
