Description | The antibody to vimentin may be used for the detection of cell types of mesenchymal origin. Among tumours staining is obvious in sarcoma, myosarcoma, lymphoma and melanoma. Vimentin is an intermediary filament protein with a molecular mass of app. 58 kDa and a diameter of 10 nm (EM). It is characteristic of cells of mesenchymal origin. Mesenchymal cells are e.g. endothelia, smooth muscles, connective tissue, all blood cells including fibroblasts and thymocytes. Also of mesenchymal origin are Sertoli Cells and Interstitial Cells of the testis and follicular cells of the ovary. Vimentin, no cross-reactivity with other intermediary filaments like Desmin, Cytokeratin, GFAP and neurofilaments. |
