| Description | CD14 is a glycophosphatidylinositolanchored protein expressed on the surfaces of monocytes and plymorphonuclear leukocytes. It acts as a coreceptor for the detection of bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS) (1). CD14 cooperates with MD2 and TLR4 to mediate the innate immune response to bacterial LPS. It acts via MyD88, TIRAP and TRAF6, leading to NFkappaB activation, cytokine secretion and the inflammatory response (2). CD14 is expressed strongly on peripheral blood monocytes and macrophages, and weakly on the surface of granulocytes (1). |
