| Description | Specificity: Synaptophysin. This antibody recognizes human synaptophysin. Synaptophysin is a synaptic vesicle glycoprotein with four transmembrane domains. It is present in neuroendocrine cells and is a specific presynaptic marker for all neurons, neuroendocrine cells, and neoplasms of neuroendocrine origin. Synaptophysin plays a role in synaptic vesicle exocytosis including cholesteroldependent vesicle biogenesis, regulation of SNARE assembly via interaction with VAMP/synaptobrevin, formation of the fusion pore initiating neurotransmitter release, and activation of vesicle endocytosis. The gene for synaptophysin has been implicated in X-linked mental retardation. |
