Description | Description: Human hemochromatosis protein also known as the HFE protein is a protein which in humans is encoded by the HFE gene. The HFE gene is located on short arm of chromosome 6 at location 6p21.3. The protein encoded by this gene is a membrane protein that is similar to MHC class I-type proteins and associates with beta2-microglobulin (beta2M). It is thought that this protein functions to regulate iron absorption by regulating the interaction of the transferrin receptor with transferrin. The iron storage disorder, hereditary haemochromatosis, is a recessive genetic disorder that results from defects in this gene.Protein Function: Binds to transferrin receptor (TFR) and reduces its affinity for iron-loaded transferrin. |
Immunogen | Immunogen: E Coli-derived human HFE recombinant protein (Position: Q82-R199). Human HFE shares 72.2% and 74.6% amino acid (aa) sequence identity with mouse and rat HFE, respectively. Subcellular Localization: Cell membrane; Single-pass type I membrane protein. Tissue Specificity: Expressed in all tissues tested except brain. |
