Product Name | Recombinant Mouse CD56/NCAM-1 (carrier-free) |
Description | CD56, also known as neural cell adhesion molecule 1 (NCAM-1), belongs to the cell adhesion molecules (CAMs) of the immunoglobulin superfamily (IgSF-CAMs). The structure of NCAM consists of five immunoglobulin-like (Ig) domains followed by two fibronectin type III (FNIII) domains, and plays a crucial role in neuronal development and synaptic plasticity. The Ig domains of CD56 are involved in homophilic binding, promoting cell-cell adhesion and helping in synaptic formation and maintenance. The FNIII domains are involved in signaling to induce neurite outgrowth. CD56 can also induce neuronal differentiation by activating several signaling molecules. Alterations in CD56 expression and CD56-mediated signaling have been associated with cognitive deficits, such as schizophrenia and Alzheimer's disease. In addition, studies have shown a positive correlation between CD56 and Hereditary Motor Sensory Neuropathy (CMT). CD56 is a significant protein involved in various neural processes, and its dysregulation has implications in several neurological conditions. |
