| Description | Bone morphogenetic protein 3 (BMP-3) belongs to the TGF-β superfamily. Like other members of the BMP family, BMP-3 is synthesized as an inactive propeptide precursor which dimerizes and then it is further processed into its mature form. BMP-3 was initially purified from bone as osteogenin; nevertheless, it does not have osteogenic activity. BMP-3 is an antagonist of osteogenic BMPs such as BMP-2, 4, and 7; BMP-3 inhibits differentiation of osteoprogenitor cells into osteoblasts induced by BMP-2. |
