| Immunogen | Insulin is a hormone produced by the beta cells of the islets of Langerhans in the pancreas. It plays an important role in the metabolism of carbohydrate by its effects on the storage of glycogen in the liver, the conversion of carbohydrate to fat, and the oxidation of glucose by the peripheral tissues. Insulin has a molecular weight of 6,000 and contains two peptide chains linked by two disulphide bonds. The hormone is isolated from porcine pancreas. Freund's complete adjuvant is used in the first step of the immunization procedure. |
